Pioneers in Indian Plant Taxonomy

Blatter Herbarium was founded by the Jesuit priest and taxonomist, Fr. Ethelbert Blatter, SJ. It was renamed in his honour in 1941 by his associate and then director of the Herbarium, Fr. Henry Santapau, SJ.

Fr. Ethelbert Blatter SJ

Ethelbert Blatter, SJ (15 December 1877—26 May 1934) was a Swiss Jesuit priest and pioneering botanist in India.

Fr. Santapau SJ

Father Santapau, director of the Botanical Survey of India, was recognized by the Indian Government with a Padmashri in 1964 for his services to Indian botany.
